What are the facts?

Derbyshire continued its downward spiral last week when they were thoroughly dispatched from Worcestershire through one innings and 23 runs.

They are now 48 points behind second place and with only three games left before the next round of groups in the championship, it appears that the third division beckons.

Warwickshire, on the other hand, was in great shape, handing over soaring Nottinghamshire last week.

They remained undefeated for the whole month of May and have only suffered one defeat in the red ball season so far. With just seven points behind the top spot and leader Essex to host second-placed Notts, Warwickshire has an excellent opportunity to move up to the promotion spots.

Who’s in shape?

Derbyshire’s all-rounder Matt Critchley not only tops their bowling charts (21 wickets at 34.76), he is also the second highest run scorer in all three championship divisions (648 runs at 54). Without him, Derbyshire would be even further behind and he will seek Fynn Hudson-Prentice (16 wickets at 28:50) and Harvey Hosein (331 runs at 55:16) to provide much-needed support.

Warwickshire’s bowling attack has been consistent and effective throughout the season and features a number of strong players with Will Rhodes (16 wickets at 17.75), Danny Briggs (18 wickets at 24.50), Oliver Hannon-Dalby (19 wickets at 33.73) and Liam Norwell (19 wickets at 9:52 p.m.) were all major contributors to the county’s success.

At the bat, young Rob Yates was the standout with 344 runs at 31.27, including two hundred, none of which is more memorable than his victorious 120, which he did not play against Master Essex.

Who says what?

Without a win in any of their seven group matches, Derbyshire appears destined for a place in the third division when the tables are split later in the season.

But manager Dave Houghton says his side will be pushing for wins and points until the end of the season.

“We’re still going to play every four day game and try to win it. If we’re in the bottom division we want to win this league,” he added.

“It’s important to our development that we win cricket games, but we play three different formats. So if we can have strong T20 or 50-over competition that would be a good success too.

“Every game is important, regardless of the format, and we just need to build up a little momentum. Hopefully things will go in our direction from there. “

After a second innings of fifty-five and six wickets with the ball, Danny Briggs was thrilled to make a match-winning contribution to Warwickshire in the final breath win over Nottinghamshire.

“I loved it,” he said. “It was enjoyable for me to have the opportunity to have a long bowl on the last day, to really use it and to bring the game home with the support of the other bowlers.

“We arched and caught really well and I think the calm we showed throughout the game probably made it possible for us to win.

“Getting the fans back on the ground was amazing. There was a great atmosphere. It was my first experience to have the Edgbaston crowd behind me and I loved it. They really supported us when we needed it and it was great to see. ” the excitement in the stands. “
