Worcestershire residents have been urged to “give it a thought” if they plan to buy a dog during the Christmas season

POTENTIAL Puppy pickers are being asked to give “paws for thought” before they buy a dog in a campaign launched by Worcestershire Regulatory Services.

During the holiday season, social media posts are published daily with a list of things people should be aware of before adding a pet to their family.

These cover topics like vet bills, pet time, and most importantly, researching the breed prior to buying to make sure it is right for you.

Pip Singleton, WRS Senior Dog Warden Officer, said, “While having a puppy seems like a fabulous idea, people need to realize that doing so is a lifelong commitment, both financial and time consuming.

“While the WRS team is here to provide unbiased help, support and advice to people struggling with pets, we want to help before that happens.

“By asking people to ‘get thoughtful,’ we encourage them to make the right choices for themselves and their new dog, rather than making an impulsive purchase they will regret.

“And of course, with the growing number of strays, we would, as always, advocate adopting, not shopping, and the kennel staff will help you make the right choice.”
