The promised July heatwave is finally here and what better way to spend it than playing a round of golf.
Fortunately for Worcestershire residents, the Top100GolfCourses website has rated the best the county has to offer.
1. Blackwell Golf Club, Agmore Rd, Bromsgrove B60 1PY
Top of the list is Blackwell Golf Club, and it’s easy to see why.
Perhaps the greatest claim to fame is that farmer Bobby Jones’ golf hall used it as a blueprint when he designed the famous 12-hole Augusta National since he loved it so much.
The Masters connection doesn’t end here, Blackwell was previously home to the Midlands Boys Championship, once won by young Sandy Lyle who later won the green jacket in 1988.
Mr. Lyle said, “The course is always in beautiful condition with excellent greens. It is a real test for golf and requires respect from players of all levels. ”
2. Worcestershire Golf Club, Wood Farm, Malvern Wells, WR14 4PP
The oldest club in the county, The Worcestershire, was founded in 1870 and is nestled in the picturesque Malvern Hills, which provide a wonderful backdrop for the course.
Worcester’s most famous resident Edward Elgar was a member of this private club, which probably tells you how special it is.
In 1920 the club moved to its current location, and Dr. Alister Mackenzie designed the new square.
Mackenzie designed the Masters’ home, Augusta National, with Jones.
Club Secretary Ryan Parfett said, “Worcestershire Golf Club is a high quality, mature golf course, blessed with breathtaking views of the Malvern Hills and the surrounding countryside. A challenging course that is often referred to as ‘one of the best’ by those who come from near and far to play it. ”
3. Worcester Golf & Country Club, Boughton Park, Worcester, WR2 4EZ
The closest club to the city center is Worcester Golf & Country Club, designed by Mackenzie in 1927.
The Grade II listed clubhouse is located in Boughton Park, the former home of several Worcester Mayors that also has tennis and racquetball clubs, so there is something for those who prefer a faster activity.
4. The Kidderminster Golf Club, Russell Road, Kidderminster, DY10 3HT
Next on the list is Kidderminster Golf Club, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the train station.
The course is known for its tree-lined holes, which make it all the more challenging as players struggle to predict the above wind speeds.
5. Redditch Golf Club, Lower Grinsty, Green Lane, Callow Hill, Redditch, B97 5PJ
Designed by Frank Pennink, this course has many natural hazards, best illustrated by the signature 12-hole Rushley Bottom, which is as challenging as it is beautiful, with a diabolical creek guarding the green.
Redditcher native and European Tour player John Bickerton said: “Redditch is without a doubt one of the best golf courses in the Midlands.”
