Fernhill Heath Scarecrow Trail returns this weekend

An ANNUAL charity scarecrow competition is in its final preparations for this weekend’s event.

Fernhill Heath’s scarecrow trail is starting on Sunday, October 23, and will be continuing throughout half term.

Founded in 2017, the community event sees individuals, families, and organizations from Fernhill Heath and the surrounding area create and erect scarecrows across the village.

Using a ‘route trail map’ residents and visitors can tour the village looking at the different entries across the half-term period with the event running from 23 to 30 October.

Proceeds from the donations for the ‘route trail map’ are going to the Dementia Cafe at Sixways, which provides invaluable help and support to residents living with dementia.

This year’s competition will see just over 100 scarecrows entered for judging.

Megan Farmer, the event organiser, said: “We live in a wonderful village. Bringing people together is key to all the events that we organize. Just before the scarecrows go up, bales of straw appear and are shared among those looking to take part.

“During the event families are out together eagerly clutching the trail map finding all the scarecrows and chatting to people who they may not have known previously.

“It is just so heart-warming to see how much pleasure an event like this gives and the support it gets is totally amazing.”

The scarecrow entries will be judged and assessed by the residents of local care home, Fernhill House, who sponsor the event.

The winning scarecrow will be announced on Wednesday (26 October) and a cash prize of £250 given to its creator.

Awards will also be given in specific categories, including the ‘Fernhill House Fun Award’.

Brenda Taylor, a resident at Fernhill House who will be among those residents judging this year’s entries, said: “This is my third time participating in the judging of the scarecrow’s entries.

“It brings me much joy to see the effort and imagination that has gone into creating them.

“I’m often very impressed. We really are very lucky to have such a vibrant community here in Fernhill Heath and I like very much to be able to participate in it”.

The event will also feature a pop-up cafe on ‘The Brum’, an open space field and play area in the center of the village.
