THE FORECAST
Worcestershire started its 2021 season with two draws against Essex and Derbyshire. However, they were lucky enough to escape Derby in a draw. Half a century for the excellent Ben Cox saved the match as he battled over 50 overs. Ed Barnard’s form is well received as the all-rounder started with eight wickets in just over 60 overs and notched a century in the opening game against Essex before backing that up with a long-standing, game-saving partnership with Cox against Derbyshire.
They face a Nottinghamshire side who continued their shocking red ball form. You haven’t won a first class match in the County Championship or the Bob Willis Trophy since June 2018 – a series of 23 games. Their loss to Warwickshire last week will hurt as the Bears chased 333 for losing seven wickets. It was a chase without Dom Sibley, who was unable to hit because of an injury. They were without Jake Ball, Brett Hutton and Luke Fletcher for that match and while they welcomed Stuart Broad back on the side they were ineffective with the ball.
It is extremely unusual to support a tie for a multi-day cricket game. Given that Worcestershire tied both games due to a long lineup with the lower order and Notts’ failure to win a game in nearly three years, we could watch one here. The incentive to beat long periods of time was increased as a draw in 2021 would receive eight points rather than five.
